MASSIVE QUESTIONS to Mr G

This week's MASSIVE QUESTIONS are brought to you by McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Acer, Atos, Dow, General Electric, Omega, Panasonic, P&G, Samsung and Visa.

WRDM 2012 has NEVER been more real than this.

***********************************************************************************************************

When I heard that Mr C was desperate to answer my MASSIVE QUESTIONS I was immediately battered by inspiration's swift right hook. "How did you manage to get Jerry Sadowitz to appear in your break out video?" "Why are Es so good?" "Is your hair naturally bleach blonde?" "Why did you close down The End when there was STILL life in Bugged Out!?" "Is Move Any Mountain to be taken literally?"

I arranged to meet Mr C this morning on the Central line so I could kill two birds with one stone; get to work and continue my MASSIVE QUESTIONS series. Imagine my embarrassment and panic when he got on at Perivale and it WASN'T the veteran rapper from The Shamen, but the veteran UK bass man and Rekids techno man, Mr G, who's album, State Of Flux, has recently been released? Luckily, my knowledge of dance music is so wide-ranging that I was able to come up with 15 questions on the spot that were both relevant and MASSIVE.

We chatted until the train pulled into Bond Street where we got off and changed for the Jubilee line south. He answered my MASSIVE QUESTIONS right up until I had to get off at Southwark. Unfortunately, I had to cut him midway through a cracking Carl Cox anecdote which would have been lovely for this blog BUT it would have made me late for work. I made a judgement call and...only God can judge me.

It was rush hour so he had to shout.

Q) For anyone unfamiliar with Mr G, could you let us know who you are, what you do and why you do it?
A) I'M AN OLD BOY THAT LOVES MUSIC......GOOD MUSIC THAT IS! BEEN IN THE GAME 2 DECADES NOW AND STILL HERE.........I MAKE MUSIC WITH OLD ANALOGUE KIT CAUSE I LOVE IT AND I AIN'T TOO BAD EITHER I BEEN TOLD.

Q) Has establishing yourself as an artist in the music industry been an uphill struggle or did it all come fairly easy?
A) AM I ESTABLISHED? STILL SEEM TO WORK TWICE AS HARD AS OTHERS AND STILL TREADING WATER. BUT STILL BATTLE ON....AND ON, CAUSE THIS IS WHAT I LOVE.

Q) I've listened to State Of Flux about 9 times now and, along with DJ W!ld's album, I'd confidently say its up there as one of the best proper, heads down, hands up, no nonsense dance records of the year. How do you evaluate your own output once you've delivered it? Are you able to sit back and appreciate it or do you just move on like a muthafucka?
A) OHH MANY A LATE NITE I LISTEN BACK TO THE ALBUM AND THINK DAM IS THAT REALLY ME ....LOVE IT ...DON'T REMEMBER WRITING THAT..WAS MADE FROM A LOT A PAIN YET SEEMS SURPRISINGLY UP .....LOL

Q) What were you influenced by whilst making State Of Flux?
A) LIFE, DEATH, PAIN, LOSING MY SPAR.......GROWING UP AND FEELING LOST IN LIFE, AND THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE DAY!

Q) Rolling snare fill or that hoover sound where it starts of low but ends up really high?
A) TWISTED LIKE ME AIN'T NO EASY RIDE. IF YOU ARE IN, YOU ARE IN TILL THE DROP! THOUGH THE SOUND FIELD.

Q) How did you come up with the moniker, Mr G? Did you ever toy with the idea of prefixing it with 'DJ', like a proper DJ (DJ Mr G) or suffixing it with more letters, like ‘old Mixxa’ (DJ Mr Gold Mixxa)?
A) MR G IS SUPPOSED TO BE GREEN GOBLIN BUT MARVEL WEREN'T HAPPY SO IT BECAME MR PHOENIX G.........................BUT MOST FOLK SAY MR G.

Q) As a boy, were you a big fan of mangos?
A) STILL AM, NOTHING BEATS A GOOD INDIAN, JULIE OR BOMBAY MANGO ANYTIME, ESPECIALLY IN JAMAICA WITH A RUM BY YOUR SIDE.

Q) As a successful DJ, are you able to go clubbing and relax, or are you constantly comparing yourself to who’s playing?
A) NO, I GO TO RAVE AND IF YOU HAVE A STORY OR PAINT A GREAT PICTURE OF WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT ...I'M THERE, SWEATY AND GETTING DOWN...IF YOU AIN'T TOUCHING ME I'M HOME FEET UP....SIMPLE.

Q) Other than, “stop reading this blog”, what advice can you give to any young readers of this blog who are eager to make a name for themselves in dance music?
A) STUDY YOUR ART, WORK FOR YOUR SHIT AS WHOOPI SAYS. PRACTICE MAKES YOUR SOUND GREAT.

Q) Sue Barker?
A) WHY HER ..................? NAH, TRY IMAN..........SAME AGE BUT LOOKS MUCH MORE FUN.

Q) Stone cold sober or absolutely fucking terminated?
A) BOTH HAVE A PLACE....SOBER TO REFLECT AND FUCKED UP TO LET GO AND FORGET LIFE'S STRESSES.

Q) How do DJs hide their genuine love and enthusiasm for dance music when there seems to be this demand by the music media that almost every shot has to be moody? Do you ever feel like telling the photographer to fuck off before breaking out the smile and saying, “shoot this face instead. I make dance music for a living, I play in clubs around the world, I live a wonderful life and I am happy. You stand there behind your camera and look moody, you miserable, one-eyed muthafucka you”?
A) I SMILE ALL THE TIME. LIFE'S FOR LIVING NOT GETTING MOODY, NUFF A THAT AROUND.............I SMILE AT MY AUDIENCE AND THEY SMILE BACK ....PERFECT, FEELS GOOOOOOD.

Q) What ambitions do you still have as an artist?
A) TO THROW DOWN IN THE STATES...........VISA PENDING???? BACK TO MY SECOND HOME JAPAN AND KEEPING IT RELEVANT IN THIS FAST MOVING WORLD.

Q) Curate your fantasy club night. What’s it called? What’s the line-up (dead or alive)? Where’s the venue? Is there a dress code?
A) G'SPOT IS THE NAME OF THE NIGHT.........SUNDAY NIGHT (SO AS TO GET THE REAL HEADS).......LINE UP IS: THEO PARRISH (CAUSE HE GONNA BRING THE BLACKNESS), LIL LOUIS (CAUSE HE CAN PLAY IT ALL AND THEN SOME), THE LIVE JAM BOYS (CAUSE THEY ARE THE BADLY NEEDED NEW BLOOD WITH THEIR OWN STORY TO TELL), BUSH WACKER BILL (OLE FRIEND FROM YARD AND KNOWS HOW TO ROCK A PARTY) AND LIVE ON STAGE MISS GRACE JONES (BRINGING THAT REGGAE/SOUL VIBE AND SHE MUST PLAY "SEEN THAT FACE BEFORE'), KING TUBBY (THE MASTER OF BASS .......DUB IT MY SELECTOR.....LOL.). 8 TILL YOU DROP.

Q) Thanks again for State Of Flux. What are your plans for the rest of the year?
A) TO KEEP ON MAKING GREAT MUSIC WITH DRIVE AND SOUL, TO STAY HUMBLE AND NOT LOSE SIGHT OF THE REAL MEANING OF LIFE...............MAKE MORE POTTERY AND GET BACK TO JAPAN!!

What a nice young man. I'm sure you'll all join me in congratulating Mr G on his career so far, his wonderful new album, State Of Flux, and wish him all the very best for his future endeavours.

State Of Flux is available to buy here: STATE OF FLUX by MR G

Mr G will be playing live on 11 August in the Panorama Bar alongside a line-up that also includes Radio Slave and Nina Kraviz, Matthew Dear in the garden and Ben Klock demolishing Berghain with Nick Höppner . I'd be there if I were the kind of person who was able to just pop to Berlin for the weekend.

I'll be back next week with more of the same I guess. I don't know who I have lined up for future MASSIVE QUESTIONS but when I sort something out I'll be the first to know...I'll then tell you.
